NEAR Intents suffered a security exploit that caused about $3.8 million in losses and led it to pause services and restrict deposits and withdrawals on multiple blockchains. CoinDesk reported that the incident involved cross-chain infrastructure rather than the underlying NEAR Protocol blockchain itself.
NEAR Intents said the incident stemmed from a vulnerability in the way its Omni deposit-and-withdrawal system interacted with a NEAR Intents smart contract. The contract vulnerability has been patched.
The affected status page listed 11 networks: BNB Smart Chain, Polygon, TON, Optimism, Avalanche, Stellar, Monad, X Layer, ADI, Scroll and Plasma.
NEAR Intents pledged to reimburse affected funds in full, reported the incident to law enforcement and said it was working with security and blockchain analytics firms to trace the funds.
Blockchain investigator ZachXBT said irregular funds flowed from a NEAR Intents hot wallet on BNB Chain to KuCoin and were then bridged into the Bitcoin network.
NEAR describes NEAR Intents as the universal transaction layer for the AI economy, connecting different chains, assets and agents while allowing solvers to compete to execute cross-chain transactions. CoinDesk reported that the NEAR Intents website said the platform had processed more than $30 billion in volume across 35 blockchains.
