Volvo Cars Expands NVIDIA Partnership to Combine Safety Engineering With Automated-Driving Platform

Volvo Cars announced an expanded partnership with NVIDIA aimed at improving automated-driving safety in future Volvo cars. The partnership will combine Volvo’s vehicle-safety systems and engineering expertise with NVIDIA’s Hyperion sensor and compute architecture, Halos OS and Alpamayo Stack driving software.

NVIDIA’s automotive page describes its full end-to-end automated-driving platform as covering AI training, simulation, in-vehicle computing and safety. Hyperion integrates partners on a modular production architecture built on NVIDIA DRIVE AGX, while Halos brings safety across the stack.

NVIDIA’s automotive page lists plans for Volvo Cars to integrate DRIVE AGX Thor, based on the Blackwell GPU architecture, into future models and to use NVIDIA DGX for advanced AI training.

An NVIDIA news release says the technology will enable future Volvo cars to travel safely from door to door through complex real-world environments, including highways, busy urban streets and parking situations. The material describes future product planning, rather than claiming that current production cars already have these functions.

The NVIDIA news release says the collaboration between Volvo and NVIDIA began in 2017 and will gradually introduce eyes-off and mind-off driving.

“The partnership combines Volvo’s safety knowledge with NVIDIA’s AI technology to create safer and more attractive cars,” Volvo Cars Chief Executive Håkan Samuelsson said.
